Nik Vogiatzis started his career as Database Systems Administrator for the Fuji Xerox Australia Pty Limited Small Business Centres (New South Wales, Australia) in 1992. Since then, he has worked in a number of roles including Systems Administrator and Faculty Computing Officer for the Faculty of Performing Arts at the University of Adelaide, Access Control/Alarms Control Co-ordinator for the Security Services Division of the University of Adelaide, Information Security Analyst for EDS (Australia) Pty Limited, Contract Analyst Programmer and then Senior Analyst Programmer for TransAdelaide.

During that time, Nik has also been a freelance software developer and runs his own software development company, Software Engineering and Research Australia Pty Limited.

Nik has expertise in developing soft real-time systems in the Railway Engineering field, and has developed a number of systems including financial systems, web-based surveys and implemented VLDBs.

The main focus at the moment is the development of the next generation of the NEXUS: Transport Research System on 5 x2100 Sun Solaris X machines with 18TB of disc space.

The projects include:

  • NEXUS: Transport Research System
    • This system is designed to model the data routinely collected from transport research and from the SCATS traffic signalling system
    • Platform
      • C# 3.5
      • GridSQL and PostgreSQL
      • Windows Server 2003 R2
      • Sun X2100 servers (x 5)
    • Development of Cross-Platform data management and analysis tools
      • Sydney Coordinated Traffic Control System Data Upload
        • Volume Store
        • Strategic Monitor
        • History; and
        • Events
      • Traffic Control Systems Analysis tool
        • For use by Transport Authorities in the management of Signalised Intersections.
      • Proposed Modules
        • Number-plate (Origin-Destination) Analysis
        • Trafikplan: Update - Dense Network Traffic Model developed originally by Professor Michael A P Taylor; this will be an upgrade to his work, and lead by Professor Taylor
        • Platform
          • C# 3.5
          • Sun Solaris X/Win32_64
          • PostgreSQL/Oracle
    • GIS-based analysis system
  • Emissions Modelling
    • Developing the software for ESRI-based models developed by ISST - Transport Systems Emissions Modellers
      • VBA, ESRI

Nik has experience in managing and developing for the following operating systems: UNIX/LINUX, Windows, DOS. He is proficient in ANSI C/C++, VC++ (inc .NET), VB (inc .NET), C#, Java, ANSI SQL-89, Informix 4GL, PL/SQL, Developer 2000 (Oracle*FORMS 4.5), Delphi/PASCAL, and PERL

Nik has won the following awards:

  • APA (Industry) Scholarship for his Doctoral work
  • 'Outstanding Paper Award' EASTS 2003 in Fukuoka Japan
  • 'David Willis Memorial Prize' ATRF 2004 in Adelaide Australia
  • Best Postgraduate Research Student for the Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment 2005
  • Australia Endeavour Chueng Kong Fellowship 2005; sebatical for 6 months to work and live in Japan at the Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto.
  • Certificate of Merit for the 2006 IAENG International Workshop on Operations Research (student)[IMECS 2006], was awarded to Hung Thanh Ngyuen (Ritsumeikan University), Hideto Ikeda (Ritsumeikan University), Nikolaos Vogiatzis (Transport Systems Centre), Zin Lin (Ritsumeikan University) for their paper titled "New Environment CREPE for Transportation Control and Effectiveness".

Notable quotes include

  • Riled Readers Respond to Restive OOP Rejection, DevX.com (Developer's Exchange) "... purpose far outweighs some abstract notion of perfection. The right machine, with the right operating system, using the right development language for the job at hand is what counts."
