Welcome to my home page. I am a senior lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, located at the City East Campus of the University of South Australia. My professional knowledge and experience include: ethics in research practice and gaining ethics approval, Qualitative methods in research (particularly Phenomenology), child protection (knowledge and application of the legislation, educating professionals, professionals' communication about abused children, various professionals'roles and caring for children who have been abused, recognition of suspected abuse), pediatric nursing, midwifery, ward management and rural nursing.

I am a Families SA trainer of mandated notification of suspected child abuse. As a result I conduct professional development sessions for professional groups such as nurses, teachers,teachers assistants and general school staff, volunteer child care workers, carers of the disabled,work for the dole participants, and students of nursing, midwifery, pharmacy, medical radiation and human movement.

Teaching interests

  • Child protection: Prevention of child abuse, responses to situations of suspected child abuse, health professionals' roles and responsibilities in cases of child abuse.

  • Mandated notification of child abuse: The Children's Protection Act (South Australia, 1993)states that certain professionals, and others, must report their suspicions of child abuse and neglect. I teach professionals and students of the health professions about their role as mandated notifiers of child abuse.

  • Research: I teach both post graduate and undergraduate students about conducting research, qualitative research approaches, ethics in research practice and research consumerism.

  • Ethics: ethics in research practice, gaining ethics approval

Research Degree Supervisor

Primary interests and experience are child protection issues and legislation, also the nurses' role; child health and welfare; decision making; interprofessional collaboration and comunication; midwifery; nursing inculturation. Research methodologies include qualitative approaches, esp Phenomenology and Ethnomethodology;and combined approaches.

Research supervision includes honours and PhD levels. Topics supervised Midwives' collection of client data, Muslim person and diabetes; breast feeding and perceptions of the breast;male rape.

Own PhD focussed on Nurses' communication about abused children and explored the experiences of both A&E and pediatric nurses with abused children.
