Hi and welcome to my home page! I have been involved in the development of Nursing and Midwifery for many years. Although teaching is an important part of my life, so is population health and I am an active member of the Public Health Association of Australia. I recently completed my PhD focussing on disadvantaged populations internationally. This research examined the social determinants of health in developing countries and Aboriginal Australians. Other organisations I was affiliated with to complete this included the Uni of the Philippines, NGO's in Timor Leste and AusAID in Loas.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health is of particular interest to me. I have been actively involved in research and collaboration with Indigenous groups and the Uniapon School for many years. A research project important to me was on the Emerging Housing Needs of Indigenous South Australians. I have visited Aboriginal communities all over Australia and have an ongoing relationship with Nganampa Health Service on the Pitjantjatjara Lands where I completed my Masters degree. I have worked as a Registerd nurse on the Lands, and as a consultant for Health Worker training. I was also an advisor for the Aboriginal Maternal Infant Care program in collaboration with The Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia and Pika Wiya community Health Centre in Pt Augusta.

With a passion for work in developing communities I visit Indonesia frequently to provide support. I have also spent time in the Philippines, Laos, Vietnam and Timor Leste to examine their health systems and extend my experiences internationally. I have convened several trips to Adelaide for Indonesian health professionals and was instrumental in instigating a relief appeal for Jogya during the 2006 Earthquake (see article below).

I am a member of The Flinders Overseas Health Group comprising a surgical team, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals, work principally in Indonesia. Our current work concentrates on Maternal & Neonatal Health in Flores through the support of an AusAID grant. The website of this group is at http://www.fohg.com.au/

In 2005 I worked as a researcher in Timor Leste. I revisited in Jan 2007 to work as a clinician in a health clinic. If you are interested you can read about this trip by clicking on 'Health barriers in Timor Leste' below!

In 2004 I worked as a Consultant to the World Health Organisation in Jakarta, in Indonesia, evaluating the Indonesian Ministry of Health 'Making Pregnancy Safer' in-service programmes for Community midwives. This has provided me with a wealth of experience and knowledge of international health. Info can be found by clicking on 'Seeking a better lot for Indonesian midwives, mothers and babies' below.
