Appointed as Head: School of Health Sciences in April 2011. Previous posts: Liverpool (1983-1994); Chinese University of Hong Kong (1990-1992), Bangor (1994-2004) and Exeter Universities (2004-2011). Former Professor of Human Physiology at Bangor and Exeter, with 5-year terms as Head of respective Schools of Sport and Health Sciences.

Positioned among leading sport and exercise scientists worldwide. Google Scholar publications H index 48; citations of published work over 7500 (Scopus H Index 36).

Author and editor of the highly acclaimed, two-volume Kinanthropometry and Exercise Physiology Laboratory Manuals (3rd Editions) ; over 200 papers on perceived exertion, exercise and muscle damage, body composition, paediatric exercise science and assessment of activity. Supervised 22 PhD and 31 MSc to completion; externally examined 31 PhD and 4 MPhil/MScRes. Currently supervising 2 PhD.

Honorary member of the Golden Key International Honour Society; Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences; Honorary Professor of Exeter University and Honorary Research Fellow of Hong Kong Baptist University. He has worked as consultant physiologist with the British Figure Skating Team and the Rugby Football Union's Young Player Development Pathway Working Group.
