Vera Lockett completed her PhD (2002) in physical chemistry at the Institute of High Temperature Electrochemistry (Russian Academy of Science). Her PhD research involved investigations of the interfacial behaviour of gold single crystal faces in molten salts under electric polarisation. This work was nationally recognised by the awarding of the “Frumkin Prize” for young electrochemists in Russia 2002, also by the Institute of High Temperature Electrochemistry with the awarding of “Young Scientist of the Year Award” for 2000 and 2002. Her further projects (2002-2006) in Russian Academy of Science were dedicated to interfacial phenomena in high temperature fuel cells and the investigations of the surface and bulk properties of immiscible molten salts. In 2002 Vera was appointed lecturer in the Polytechnic University and the Geological University (Yekaterinburg, Russia). The subjects she taught were Physical Chemistry, Colloid Chemistry, General Chemistry and Ecological Aspects of Chemistry. She developed several lecture programs culminating in the publishing of two textbooks, “Ecological assessment, Yekaterinburg, 2004, 166p.” “Rational nature management, Moscow, 2008, 459p.”. In 2006 Vera joined the Ian Wark Research Institute as a Research Associate. Her current project is devoted to the investigations of interfacial properties of a new class of low temperature organic molten salts – ionic liquids. The fundamental aspects of these have not been investigated until recently and the practical prospective is very bright, especially for electrochemical applications. The interfacial structures of ionic liquids and adsorption are currently Vera’s main research interests. Vera has also published about 20 research papers.
