Associate Professor Joanne Cys is Program Director for Interior Architecture. Joanne joined the School following experience in professional practice as senior interior designer with a major architectural firm working on medium to large scale commercial projects.
Joanne's qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts (University of Adelaide), a Bachelor of Arts (Interior Design) and a Master of Architecture (University of South Australia) and her particular research interests are in the professional status and directions of interior design practice and continuing professional education for design practitioners.
Joanne has been invited to speak at international and national conferences and is a regularly invited contributor to professional design journals. With her UniSA colleague Jane Lawrence, Joanne coordinates the Creative Masterclass program for design practitioners.
Joanne is actively involved in the Design Institute of Australia and is National President of the DIA and convenor of the judging panels of the National Interior Design Awards. In 2004, Joanne was bestowed the title of Fellow of the Design Institute of Australia. Joanne is Australia’s representative on the Global Design Network(GDN) and the Asia Pacific Space Designer’s Association (APSDA). Joanne is an executive member of the Interior Design/Interior Educator's Association (IDEA).

Teaching interests
- Joanne’s teaching interests focus on the practice of interior design and the opportunities to make undergraduate study a professionally relevant experience for students.
- Joanne is the Course Coordinator for the following Interior Architecture courses: Professional Management and Professional Design Communication. She also teaches in Interior Architecture Studio, Interior Architecture Studies and Design Culture and Environment.

Research interests
- Joanne’s research interests are in the professional status and directions of interior design practice, continuing professional education and multi-disciplinary design collaboration.
- She developed the strategy for Continuing Professional Education for design practitioners in Australia which has been adopted by the DIA. She has published widely in this area.
- Joanne's current research activity relates to collaborative practice and she has been invited to present papers at conferences relating to her work in this area. In 2006, she was invited to author the ‘Design Services’ chapter of the Creative Industries Briefing Report for Austrade.
- In 2006, Joanne was invited to curate the ‘Salon South’ Furniture exhibition at JamFactory Gallery 1. She was a key organiser of the 2004 'match' creative disciplines collaboration tournament and the 2006 Xpress design competition. She was the creative director of the [X]periment '05 Design Symposium and is currently directing the [X]periment ’07 Design Symposium.
