Welcome to Manya Angley's homepage at the University of South Australia.
I am located at City East Campus, where I am a Senior Research Fellow in the Sansom Institute, School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences.
Since graduating in 1989 I have been an academic in the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences apart from a period of family leave. I have also worked extensively as a hospital and as a community pharmacist.
My research interests include supporting the patient along the continuum of care with respect to medication management. I lead a statewide post-discharge medication management research project and am involved in a national post-discharge management of patients prescribed warfarin project, both funded by the Guild Government Agreement. These projects are implemented at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, Repatriation General Hospital, Flinders Medical Centre and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. I also play a key role in an antipsychotic medication management research project based at the Women's and Children's Hospital.
I also have an interest in the aetiology and management of autism. I have research links with Assoc. Prof. Robyn Young, Director of the Early Intervention Research Program for children with autism at Flinders University as well as Autism SA. I established the multi-disciplinary Autism Research Group (ARG) within the Sansom Institute in 2004. ARG activities include development of a laboratory test to diagnose and subtype autism and quality use of conventional and complementary medicines in autism.

Current Projects:
Development of a laboratory test to diagnose and phenotype autism
| Autism spectrum disorder includes a continuum of a complex and diverse developmental conditions reported to affect as many as 1 in 160 Australian children. Evidence shows children with autism make substantial progress with intensive and early intervention. However, early diagnosis is problematical as there are currently no laboratory diagnostic tests and diagnosis is based on a cluster of behaviours. This novel project will investigate metabonomic profiles of children with autism and link these with clinical data to develop a diagnostic and phenotyping tool. Successful development of such a tool will enable a diagnosis to be confirmed earlier, appropriate interventions implemented and therefore optimise outcomes for individuals with autism. |
| A 2006 project examined rationale, safety and efficacy of a range of CAMs and dietary interventions used in autism. Results from this work will be incorporated into guidelines specifically developed for families and Health Care Profesionals (HCPs). A 2007 honours project will focus on determining information needs of caregivers and HCPs. A further project will involve assembling the resource and piloting them with a range of HCPs and parents/carers. |
