Australian Centre for Asian Business Director, Professor Ying Zhu was born in Beijing and graduated from Peking University with a Bachelor of International Economics. He then worked as an economist at Shenzhen Special Economic Zone for four years. He did his PhD thesis at the University of Melbourne on the role of export processing zones in East Asian development; focusing on South Korea, Taiwan, China and Thailand. After completing his PhD he worked at the University of Victoria and the University of Melbourne for 17 years. He was Director of the Masters of Human Resource Management at the University of Melbourne before joining the University of South Australia in 2011. He has been a visiting scholar at the International Labour Organization, Cambridge University and the World Bank. He currently leads an ARC Discovery Project on labour market segmentation and inequality in China; a Group Mission Project funded by ACSRF on Community Development in Australia and China; and an Australia-Malaysia Institute funded project on the impacts of ICT on community development in Australia and Malaysia. His research interests include international human resource management, employment relations in Asia, labour law and regulations in Asia, economic development in the Asia Pacific, and Australia-China bilateral economic relationships. As the Centre Director Prof. Zhu has developed strong industry links, he draws on his business expertise and bilingual language capabilities to assist industry to develop business synergies with their Asian counterparts.
